Pro-democracy always

Authoritarian governments are bad for human rights and bad for business. You may only care about one or the other, but they’re bad for both. Rule of law, protection of peoples’ rights and predictability all matter for a country’s success - economically, geopolitically and culturally. Soft power and influence such as via USAID and organizations like the Peace Corps or contributions to medical and scientific research pay dividends for the U.S. far beyond what is spent to earn them. I studied Government and Democracy. I’ve worked and volunteered - at Notre Dame, with the International Rescue Committee and beyond - with immigrants and refugees who had to flee their countries after they were taken over by authoritarians. Many family members have served in various branches of government over the years through to today, from my dad working 40+ years at the U.S. Department of Labor ensuring workers were paid right, to my maternal grandpa serving as speechwriter for seven Secretaries of Agriculture to others in State Dept, GSA, National Forest Service and more. We are in Black History Month, though few are acknowledging it this year, and as MLK Jr. said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Letting democracy erode, as it is rapidly doing these weeks in the U.S., is not an easy fix. The sooner we stand up to reinforce and reinstitute democratic protections, the better.
